Ananya Dance Theatre (ADT) is an ensemble of BIPOC women/femme professional dance artists who create original contemporary dance theater, upholding artistic excellence in social justice choreography. Inspired by the lives and dreams of BIPOC women/femmes around the globe, we work to dismantle hierarchies and build liberation. Through community-embedded creative processes, we strive to build a multi-dimensional movement of arts for social change.

Our Practice
ADT has premiered one ~80-minute original work with commissioned score annually since 2005. Each work is conceptualized and created by our Artistic Director, developed in collaboration with guest artists and designers (music and sound composition, spoken word, and lighting, scenic, and costume design), and grown to its full realization through the rigorous practice of company dancers.

Whether in performance or at community events, the audience’s experience with Ananya Dance Theatre is cellular, vibrating, activating: invigorating in an interior place that surpasses words. You depart knowing that something has happened inside you, even if the words to describe it have not yet come to you.
ADT's artistry unfolds through Yorchhā, our devised contemporary feminist dance form, which proudly declares its contemporary and innovative aesthetic, even as it celebrates its creation from an intentional deconstruction and reassembly of traditional Odissi, Vinyasa Yoga, and the martial art Chhau. Community engagement is integral to our creation process. Our performances conjure a world in which the BIPOC/femme artists of ADT are located in places of cultural specificity, while simultaneously released from the narrow identity politics that constrain us from connecting. We shine our lights on each other, reveling in the liberation of mutual beholding.
